Praise the LORD! Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who greatly delights in his commandments! His offspring will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever. Light dawns in the darkness for the upright; he is gracious, merciful, and righteous. It is well with the man who deals generously and lends; who conducts his affairs with justice. For the righteous will never be moved; he will be remembered forever. He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD. His heart is steady; he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries. He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his horn is exalted in honor. The wicked man sees it and is angry; he gnashes his teeth and melts away; the desire of the wicked will perish! (Psalm 112 ESV)

You may be asking the question; what does a spiritually mature person look like? Most Christians have a desire to grow up and learn to respond to adverse situations like Jesus did. I know that my goal is to be  mature in the faith. So, as I was meditating on Psalm 112, I believe I got a glimpse of the favor and blessing that rest on a spiritually mature believer.

The Psalm is self explanatory but my attention kept coming back to these two verses:

 He is not afraid of bad news;
his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord.

 His heart is steady; he will not be afraid,
until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.

These verses describe a man who has been transformed by his walk with God. His fear of the Lord will not allow him to fear man, nor does he live in fear of bad news. Political and economic systems can can come crashing down around him, but he remains faithful. This is the type of man who is also  described in Psalm 1. He meditates on the word of God day and night, and lives a life free of covetousness. And God can trust him with material wealth.

He doesn’t begrudging obey God’s commands, they are his delight. He feast on the word of God. This person has built their  house on the Rock and is not tossed around by the storms of life. He is not the least bit intimidated by his enemies. To walk in this level of maturity requires a life of consistent  pursuit of intimacy with Jesus. You can’t trust someone  that you barely know. But this person has grown close to the LORD in prayer and has experienced the  faithfulness of the Father.  Knowing and obeying God must be our all consuming passion.

This type of person will, “have foundations of eternity built into the structure of their soul and thereby acquire a firm heart.” ( 1)  Mercy and giving characterize this believer in Yahwah. And he has grow in love  for people.  He shows a quite confidence and trust in the LORD, and trust will be crucial in the days ahead,  if we are to remain steady in the mist of adversity.
