For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. (James 1:3 NLT)
Our natural and spiritual lives are closely connected. We find ourselves in different seasons of life where we experience severe trials, and periods of testing. It’s not easy to deal with changes in either our natural, or spiritual lives. Everyone goes through periods of having to deal with physical, emotional, and spiritual changes. My favorite times in my walk with the Lord are of spiritual renewal. But, in reality those spiritual mountain top experiences aren’t always consistent.
Our goal is to learn to always abide in the presence of God. But, we must remember that our spiritual highs or lows don’t define us as God’s children. God alone defines who we are, and we are His sons and daughters who make up the living stones of his spiritual temple. His Spirit dwells in us.
I believe it is possible to live a life that is characterized by the fruit and the fullness of the Holy Spirit. But the real test of our faith comes when we enter into seasons of hopelessness and despair. Will we stay true to God until we are experiencing his presence again? We who belong to God are kept by him during times of spiritual dryness and defeat. But if we respond to the Father’s discipline, we will grow into greater maturity.
Spiritual growth comes to those whose spiritual roots are planted deep in God’s word. During times of spiritual famine God sustains us through the depth of the work he has done in our lives through his Word and Spirit.
